Science Communications Specialist

Your role

The Science Communications Specialist will establish and develop the LCSES Science Media Hub, which communicates LCSES research to the public and key stakeholders while identifying emerging societal issues where LCSES researchers can provide evidence-based insights. The Hub will serve as a central source of trusted scientific expertise on climate and sustainability for journalists.

The job holder will work closely with the LCSES Data Science Team to create innovative, interactive communication tools showcasing the centre’s research. Through these activities, the Science Media Hub will strengthen LCSES’s visibility by translating complex socio-environmental research—on climate, biodiversity, resource use, and societal systems—into clear messages for media, policymakers, stakeholders, and the public, while responding quickly to emerging developments.

Scientific Monitoring and Analysis

  • Monitor global and European developments related to LCSES research topics and geographic focus, identifying issues relevant for media, policymakers, and the public
  • In collaboration with LCSES researchers, provide rapid assessments of emerging events, e.g., new studies, policy decisions, environmental crises

Strategic Communication

  • Lead the development and implementation of the LCSES communication strategy
  • Position the Centre as a trusted source of insights on socio-environmental systems and strengthen connections with national and international leading media outlets

Content Development

  • Translate complex research findings into engaging, audience-appropriate language, e.g., expert statements, briefings, fact sheets
  • Develop communication formats highlighting links between human activities and the environment, e.g., visuals, narratives, infographics

Media Relations and Public Engagement

  • Serve as a contact point for journalists, coordinating interviews, quotes, and background discussions
  • Draft press releases, media briefings, and updates on LCSES research

Internal Collaboration and Expert Network

  • Build and maintain networks of internal and external experts relevant to LCSES research themes
  • Provide guidance on effective communication, media readiness, and audience-focused messaging

Your profile

  • Master’s degree
  • Expertise in the fields of environmental and sustainability sciences
  • Professional experience in science journalism and science communication to diverse audiences, including policymakers, researchers, and the public
  • Strong ability to assess journalistic topics and identify scientific topics of public relevance
  • Ability to understand and critically assess scientific publications and translate them into accessible formats. Commitment to scientific integrity, transparency, and evidence‑based communication
  • Strong analytical skills and intellectual curiosity
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken, is required
