INT-26046- MANUFACTURING AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF META-MATERIALS FOR IMPACT PROTECTION

Internship contract (compulsory) – 6 months | Fulltime/40h | From 01.03.2026 to 30.09.2026 | Hautscharage

Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

How will you contribute?

During this internship, you will contribute to an ongoing research line on lightweight protective structures, focusing on the manufacturing and experimental assessment of architected lattices, particularly Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) cores, intended for integration into sandwich panels to improve resistance to low-velocity impact / ballistic-like loading while maintaining low mass.

Working under the supervision of experienced researchers, you will gain hands-on exposure to the digital-to-physical workflow, from preparing printable lattice geometries to producing test data that supports research decisions and numerical modelling activities.

Your contributions will include:

  • Conducting a focused state-of-the-art review on TPMS lattices, sandwich panels, and experimental approaches for characterising lattice/core behaviour.

  • Supporting the definition and documentation of a test plan for TPMS lattice arrays/coupons (e.g., relative density, cell size, build orientation), in coordination with the modelling internship.

  • Preparing TPMS geometries for additive manufacturing (e.g., export checks, basic build preparation) and carrying out supervised 3D printing of selected configurations.

  • Assisting in material characterisation activities relevant for modelling (e.g., generating stress–strain data for the selected base material, where applicable).

  • Performing or following, under supervision and according to available laboratory procedures, basic mechanical tests on printed lattice arrays/coupons (e.g., compression, tension where feasible, and 3-point bending).

  • Processing and organising experimental results (e.g., force–displacement / stress–strain curves, summary indicators) and discussing trends and limitations with the supervisors.

This internship is run in parallel with a companion modelling internship. The material data and test observations you generate will support the selection/calibration of modelling parameters and help benchmark modelling trends. In return, simulation results will help prioritise which TPMS topologies and parameter ranges should be manufactured and tested first. Regular joint check-ins and shared documentation will ensure alignment.

This role is intended to be informative, exploratory, and vocational, helping you to develop practical skills while contributing to the broader research context in a meaningful and educational way.
